Introduction: ShipStation automatically submits your customs forms electronically for UPS* (via Electronic Data Interchange, or EDI), FedEx (via Electronic Trade Documents, or ETD). and DHL Express (Paperless Trade, or PLT).
Electronic form submission then happens when you create the shipments for any orders that:
- Require a customs form, and
- Are sent via any of these carriers.
The ETD and PLT features are enabled by default for FedEx and DHL users shipping through ShipStation. That said, be mindful that certain restrictions may apply based on destination.
*UPS users must apply to UPS directly for this service. Once enabled on the UPS side, it will be enabled on the ShipStation side. To apply online, go to the UPS Paperless Invoice Enrollment page and click on the option to enroll in the paperless invoice.
UPS & FedEx
EDI is printed on UPS labels signifying the customs forms have been electronically submitted.
ETD is printed on FedEx labels when we've submitted your customs forms electronically. For FedEx International Ground the letters ETD will appear in a black box under the shipping service icon.
For other FedEx International services, the letters ETD will be printed underneath the service name near the bottom of the label.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you see INV instead of EDI then that means the customs information will not be transmitted electronically.
If this happens, you will need to print your customs forms from ShipStation and include them with the shipment. In this case, it is possible EDI is not enabled on your UPS account.
For instructions on printing your UPS customs forms, see the help article Where Can I Find My Customs Forms?
If you wish to have this transmitted electronically, contact UPS or FedEx directly to see what is needed to set this up.
DHL Express also transmits Customs Declarations electronically by default for all connected accounts depending on the destination country.
If the country being shipped to supports Paperless Trade, then you don't need to print out the customs form.
If paperless Trade is supported for a shipment, the label will include C-PLT*
*If PLT is not supported, PLT will not be present
You can also see Paperless Trade support listed on the archive document that prints out with the label under the Features/Services section.
If the label does not display PLT and the archive document does not list Paperless Trade below the Features/Services section, you will need to print your customs forms. Check with your carrier account manager to find out if the forms need to be attached to the box or handed over to the driver.
