A FedEx meter number is an identification number associated with your FedEx account that FedEx uses to calculate your negotiated rates.
You do not need to enter a meter number into ShipStation. Instead, ShipStation sends FedEx the addresses entered into ShipStation's FedEx Connection window, and this registers a meter number in your FedEx account. ShipStation then stores the meter number and uses it when getting rates for your FedEx shipments.
You may encounter the following alert:
"FedExMeterManager: Unable to register meter. Account ##### Shipping address provided does not match our records."
This can occur when registering the FedEx account in ShipStation, or when getting rates or creating labels with a newly added Ship From Location. This article provides advice on how you can resolve the issue in either instance.
When registering the FedEx account...
You may see the above error if the address you entered into ShipStation's FedEx connection window does not match the origin address FedEx has on file for your account.
To fix this:
Enter your FedEx shipping origin address when adding your FedEx account to ShipStation.
- If you're unsure what your FedEx shipping origin address is, please contact FedEx Billing support and they'll be able to provide you with your account address.
Once your FedEx account connects to ShipStation successfully, you can create FedEx labels using any Ship From Location in ShipStation.
When getting rates or creating labels...
You may see the above error when getting rates or creating labels if you add a new Ship From Location to ShipStation that uses an origin address different from your FedEx account address.
In order to create shipping labels with FedEx, ShipStation needs to register the Ship From Location with FedEx to receive a meter number, but this error message indicates the address we're submitting is not valid according to FedEx.
Here's how to resolve this:
Head to your Account Settings (the wrench icon in the upper right).
Next, select Shipping and then Ship From Locations from the sidebar on the left.
Select Edit next to the Ship From Location receiving the error.
Modify the Ship From Location's origin and return address.
- The origin address is what we're submitting to FedEx, so update it to use the same address you used to register FedEx to ShipStation. Be sure to Save Changes when you're done.
Go back to the Orders tab and select the order again.
Click Get Rate and ShipStation will try to register the meter again. If successful, the error will go away and a rate will be returned.
If the error persists:
- Go back into the settings and modify the Ship From Location again, using any alternative addresses FedEx may have on file for you. If you've changed addresses in FedEx in the past, it may also be helpful to try using the old account address. If you're still unable to figure out which address FedEx has on file for you, you can reach out to their FedEx Billing support to verify your address.
Once the error is cleared up and you're able to get a rate:
- You will need to edit the Ship From Address one last time. Go back into the into the settings and modify the Ship From Location again, but this time use the origin address that you'll actually be shipping from.
That's it! We only needed the FedEx origin address the first time we contact FedEx during registration or a new Ship From Location - once it's registered for that Ship From Location, you can continue to get rates and create labels without error.
You will need to follow this process for any new Ship From Locations you create that do not use your FedEx account address.
