Updated Customs Description Requirements for Shipments to the EU
Beginning February 2nd, 2026 the European Union will have enhanced customs descriptions requirements. The new requirements will include a list of Stop words, which are generic descriptions that do not allow customs authorities to clearly identify the nature of the goods being imported.
Please see Country-Specific Cross-Border Shipping Requirements for more information on the updated description requirements.

The ShipStation integration with Yodel allows for the following additional features:
In alignment with the Windsor Framework, Yodel introduced additional data requirements when shipping from the UK to Northern Ireland (NI). These changes took effect on 1st May 2025.
On 19th September 2024, the UK Government confirmed that the new arrangements under the Windsor Framework for parcels and freight movements that were planned to come into effect from 30th September 2024 were deferred until 1st May 2025. See Sending parcels to and from Northern Ireland for the full statement.
-
Yodel does not support B2B shipments from the UK to NI. As there are additional considerations for B2B shipments to NI, you should use a carrier that supports this movement type.
-
For all other shipments from the UK to NI, Yodel will require the following data to be provided for each product in the shipment:
-
Description
-
Quantity
-
Value (currency and amount)
-
-
Additionally, if available, Yodel recommends adding the HS Harmonized Tariff code.
Mandatory Data as of 1st May 2025
The above data will be mandatory as of 1st May 2025. If not provided, the label will not be generated. If available, you can provide the data for this type of shipment before the deadline.
-
Ship Date can be set to today’s date or be set to a future date.
-
InPost requires a customer email to be included on the order to successfully create a label. Customer phone number is optional.
-
Label Messages are not supported: InPost Safe Place service messages do not print on the label. Safe Place is the only service that allows for message input in the UI, but messages (i.e. front porch, conservatory, shed, or your preferred safe place) only appear on the delivery driver’s hand scanner.
-
Customs forms are required for the Channel Islands and Northern Ireland only.
Here are some common issues, potential causes, and troubleshooting tips.

Issue |
How to Troubleshoot or Resolve |
|---|---|
|
Error: invalid tariff code |
What it means: The invalid tariff code error message has nothing to do with tariffs, taxes, or customs. The error appears because you selected an invalid service for the shipment. For example, if you attempt to use Xpress 24 POD NI Only for a shipment not destined for Northern Ireland (NI Only here means “Northern Ireland Only”), you would receive this message since the service is not valid for that destination. What to do: Contact the Yodel Help Centre if you are unsure which services are valid for your shipments. |
