Mark Returned Shipments as Received

Once you or your customer has initiated a return that shipment will appear in Shipments > Returns > Outstanding so that you can easily keep track of your in progress returns. Once the returned item arrives at your warehouse you can mark it as returned to move it to the Received tab.

There are 3 ways to mark a return as received:

  • Individually in the Return Details screen:

Open the Return Details screen, click the ellipsis menu ellpisis_menu.png and choose Mark As Received.

V3 Return Detail with arrow pointed to Other Actions menu with Mark as Received selected.
  • Individually or in bulk using the Shipping > Returns grid:

Go to the Shipments > Returns, select the return(s), and click the Mark As Received button. This will open a pop-up calendar to add the date you received the return. Choose the date and then click Mark As Received one more time.

V3 Shipping Returns grid with Mark as Received button highlighted.
  • Automatically mark returns using trackable services as received: there is a checkbox in Settings ICON_SET_SHP_SCSsettings.png > Shipping > Return that is enabled by default to automatically mark returns using a service that supports auto-tracking as received.

Default Return Service for Standard and Manual Return Labels

The Default Return Service setting in your account applies to manual return labels and the Branded Returns Portal. You can access these settings in Settings ICON_SET_SHP_SCSsettings.png > Shipping > Returns.

Here you will be able to set the default carrier service and package type for your Manual or Standard return labels. The default setting is to use the same services as the outbound shipment.

By default, the Automatically mark returns as "Received" if tracked option is checked. That way, if the return uses a service that supports auto-tracking, ShipStation will update the shipment as Received as soon as we receive the tracking notification from the carrier.

If this option is not checked, or the return service does not support auto-tracking, you can manually mark the shipment as Received in ShipStation so you can keep track of outstanding returns.
