How can I hide or remove Item Options (like size or color) on packing slips?

For merchants who can create and edit custom packing slips, you can hide or remove Item Options (or Shopify’s Note Attributes), like size or color, from appearing on the packing slips. Removing Item Options provides valuable space, particularly on smaller 4" x 6" packing slips.

Orders that import into ShipStation with Item Options, by default, will show that additional information.

Where do I find Item Options?

These descriptions will appear in two places. In an order's Shipment Details, the Item Options appear under the Description.

Shipment Details. A box shows where the order's Item Options appear under the Description

On a packing slip, they also appear under the Description, as seen in this Print Preview.

Because this process may not be intuitive for all customers, we guide you through it here. Additionally, we have some suggested steps on how to apply this option as the default template.

Remove Item Options from Packing Slips

To remove Item Options, follow these steps to edit the packing slip code:

  1. Click the Actions menu Actions menu. Three-dot ellipsis next to the packing slip to adjust, then click Copy.

This will open the Update Packing Slip Template pop-up.

Settings > Templates > Packing Slip. Shows the Action menu opened & the Copy button
  2. Open the Order Items section of the Update Packing Slip Template pop-up.

You may need to collapse the Order Header or the Order Items Header section to see it.

Order Items header is shown open to reveal code.

    Name Your Packing Slip Template

While you are editing in the Packing Slip Template, we recommend re-naming this template to include (NO ITEM DESCRIPTIONS). This name aids in setting up store-specific packing slips or automation rules (as described below).

  3. Delete <br>[Item Options] from line 3 of your packing slip's code that reads,

    <td>[Item Title]<br>[Item Options]</td>

Line 3: Item Options is highlighted in the code.

    to then read,

    <td>[Item Title]</td>

Line 3 now reads Item-Title Only, and Item options is removed
  4. Click Save.

You can now check the Print Preview and see that Item Options (or Shopify’s Note Attributes) no longer show on the packing slip.

Set Up Store-Specific Packing Slips

To set up and use a store-specific packing slip, follow these steps.

  1. Go to the Packing Slips tab, then choose the packing slip template you just created or updated to show No Item Options.

SETTINGS. STORE. Templates. Packing Slips. Template menu: No-Item-Options template being selected
  2. Click Save Changes.

Automation Rules: Use a Specific Packing Slip Template

If you manage multiple stores or need a specific template based on order criteria, follow these steps to apply an automation rule.

  1. Name the rule and set criteria to match or choose from the + Add Criteria menu.

We recommend a name like Use No-Item-Options Packing Slip.

AUTOMATION. Define-Rule pop-up. Shows the Rule Name field and Criteria options
  2. Select Use a specific Packing Slip from the Action Type menu, then select your template from the Packing Slip Template to Use menu.

    Define-Rule pop-up. Shows Action-Type: Use-Pack-Slip & No-Item-Options template chosen
  3. Click Save Rule.
