The Automations Overview tab is your central hub for everything automation in ShipStation. It’s designed to give you a clear, complete picture of how automation can simplify your workflow, reduce manual tasks, and keep your operations running smoothly.
Pre-built templates and recommended playbooks allow you to quickly implement proven automation workflows without starting from scratch. You can easily tailor these rules to your unique fulfillment process by adjusting key variables like shipping methods, item quantities, and order conditions. At the core of the Automations Overview experience is the Automation Playbook. These ready-to-use, out-of-the-box automation rules are built from workflows proven to work well for most merchants. These templates give you a strong starting point, so you don’t have to build automations from scratch. Instead, you can easily customize key details or conditions, like quantities, insurance, or shipping methods, to fit your specific needs while still benefiting from best-practice defaults.
The Automation Playbook also provides a consolidated view of the automation tools available within ShipStation. This view makes it easier to discover, enable, and manage automated features in one place. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to expand your use of automation, this page helps you take action quickly and with confidence.
The Automation tools section shows which tools and templates are currently enabled, so you can easily track which automations are active in your account.
If you discover a new automation feature in the Automation Tools section, click the Set Up button next to the feature to activate and configure it for your workflow. Here’s a breakdown of each Automation Feature.

Auto-Routing: Automate which warehouses stock the order items and which warehouses are closest to the recipient’s address.

Service Mappings: Set the shipping service and package type based on preferences or what your customer chose during checkout.

Automation Rules: Use logic to identify triggers that can fire actions. Automation rules are the most customizable of all automation features.

Product Preset Groups: Set weight, dimensions, and international shipping services, and customs information for multiple products.

Rate Shopper: Configure which services you’d like to compare as well as define any delivery time or service requirements.
