Shipment Tracking Dashboard - Overview

The Shipment Tracking dashboard gives you a real-time view of where your shipments stand after labels have been created, from carrier acceptance all the way through to delivery. Unlike the Carrier Performance dashboard (which focuses on SLA and transit time analysis), this dashboard is operationally focused. It shows you what's moving, what's been delivered, what's stuck, and what has an exception that needs attention.

The dashboard defaults to the last 7 days of order date data, and refreshes once a day.

Important Scope Note

This dashboard only includes shipments sent through carriers that ShipStation can track. Shipments created with "Other" carrier types (where ShipStation cannot query the carrier for tracking updates) are excluded from all metrics on this dashboard.

Dashboard Filters

The filter bar at the top of the dashboard controls the scope of all metrics, charts, and tables on the page simultaneously.

Analytics_Shipment-Tracking_Filter-Bar_MRK.png

The table below outlines the available filters on the dashboard, allowing you to segment your shipment data by dates, carriers, services, and locations.

Filter

Description

Order Date

The date the customer's order was placed. Defaults to Last 7 Days. This is the primary date dimension for the dashboard.

Tracking Event Date

The date of the most recent tracking event recorded by the carrier. Useful for focusing on shipments with recent activity (or lack thereof).

Carrier

Filter to a specific carrier (e.g., USPS, UPS, FedEx).

Carrier Account

Filter to a specific connected carrier account if you have multiple accounts with the same carrier.

Shipping Service

Filter to a specific service level (e.g., USPS Ground Advantage, UPS® Ground Saver).

Warehouse

Filter to shipments originating from a specific warehouse or ship-from location.

Shipments in Transit

This is the primary summary section of the dashboard. It provides a snapshot of all shipments currently in the carrier network, grouped into six high-level KPI tiles. All figures are scoped to the selected filter range and only include shipments with trackable carrier labels.

Bar Chart and Percentages showing Shipments in Transit.

Metric - Shipments with Carrier Tracking

Example value: 137

This metric represents the total number of shipments sent using a carrier that ShipStation actively tracks.

For these carriers, ShipStation is able to query their systems directly to retrieve a delivery status.

This is the top-level count that all other metrics on this dashboard are derived from. Shipments created with "Other" carrier types that ShipStation cannot track are not counted here and are not reflected anywhere on this dashboard.

Metric - Shipments In Transit

Example value: 82

The count of shipments that are actively moving through the carrier network and have not yet been delivered.

These are shipments with a tracking status of In Transit. This is the core operational metric for teams monitoring open fulfillments.

Metric - Shipments Delivered / Undelivered

Example values: 16 Delivered | 121 Undelivered

A count of shipments that have received a confirmed delivery scan from the carrier within the filter period.

The secondary figure (121 Undelivered) shows how many shipments in the same period have not yet been delivered, providing context for the volume of shipments still outstanding.

Metric - Shipments Delivered % / Undelivered %

Example values: 11.68% Delivered | 88.32% Undelivered

The percentage equivalent of the Metric - Shipments Delivered / Undelivered, this metric shows what share of all trackable shipments have been confirmed delivered versus those that are still open.

Keep in mind that recent shipments (like those labeled yesterday) will initially show a low delivered percentage. As time passes and carriers scan deliveries, this percentage should trend toward 100%.

Metric - Exceptions

Example value: 1

The count of shipments that have received a carrier exception tracking event.

An exception means the carrier has flagged a problem with the delivery, such as a wrong address, a refused package, or a misrouted shipment. These shipments require direct attention and are detailed further in the Exception Reasons and Order Shipment Exceptions panels section.

Metric - Rate of Exceptions / No Exceptions

Example values: 0.73% Exceptions | 99.27% No Exceptions

The percentage of trackable shipments that have encountered a carrier exception.

A low exception rate (under 1–2%) is generally healthy. A spike in this metric can indicate systemic issues such as address data quality problems, carrier handling issues, or fulfillment errors that warrant investigation.

Open Shipments Over Time

Monitor your transit pipeline daily using the Open Shipments Over Time visualization. By mapping outstanding shipments against their original label date, this chart groups undelivered packages by their real-time carrier status to help you optimize delivery performance.

Metric - Open Shipments Over Time (Stacked Bar Chart)

A daily stacked bar chart showing the count of open (undelivered) shipments grouped by label create date, with each bar color-coded by current tracking status.

Each bar represents one day, and the segments show how many shipments from that date are currently in each status.

This chart is useful for spotting operational patterns — for example, a large orange segment on older label dates may indicate shipments that have been in transit longer than expected and may need follow-up with the carrier.

Shipments by Status & Order Shipment Status

This section details the Shipments by Status and Order Shipment Status tables, which provide both high-level summaries and granular tracking for your outstanding orders. Use these components to audit carrier performance and drill down into specific shipments directly from the dashboard.

Metric - Shipments by Status (Table)

A summary table listing all current tracking status categories and the count of shipments in each. The proportional bar provides a quick visual of which status dominates. This is a rolled-up aggregate view of the stacked bar chart in Section 3.

Column

Description

Tracking Status Description

The carrier-reported tracking status.

Shipment Tracking

Count of shipments currently in that status, with a proportional volume bar.

Tracking Status Definitions:

  • In Transit: The carrier has scanned the package, and it is actively moving toward its destination.

  • Accepted: The carrier has accepted the package at a drop-off or pickup location but has not yet recorded in-transit movement.

  • Not Yet In System: A label has been created and printed, but the carrier has not yet scanned the package into their network. If shipments remain in this status for more than 1–2 business days, it may indicate the package was not handed off to the carrier.

  • Exception: The carrier has flagged a delivery problem. See the Exception Reasons & Order Shipment Exceptions section.

  • Unknown: The tracking status returned by the carrier does not map to a recognized status category.

Metric - Order Shipment Status (Table)

A granular, row-level list of individual shipments and their current tracking status. This table allows operations teams to review the status of specific orders directly within the dashboard without needing to navigate to the Shipments screen.

Column

Description

Tracking Event Date

The date of the most recent carrier tracking event for this shipment.

Order Number

The ShipStation order number associated with this shipment.

Tracking Number

The carrier-assigned tracking number (truncated in the display).

Tracking Status Description

The current tracking status of this individual shipment.

Exception Reasons & Order Shipment Exceptions

This section covers the Exception Reasons and Order Shipment Exceptions tables, which serve as your diagnostic tool and action list for delivery issues. Use these views to identify systemic carrier problems and access a list of individual shipments requiring direct intervention.

Metric - Exception Reasons (Table)

A summary table grouping all current shipment exceptions by their exception type. This helps quickly identify whether a pattern exists. For example, if all exceptions are "MIS-SHIPPED," that points to a fulfillment or labeling process issue rather than an isolated carrier problem.

Column

Description

Tracking Exception Description

The carrier-reported exception reason (e.g., MIS-SHIPPED, Address Issue, Refused).

Shipment Tracking

Count of shipments with this exception type.

Metric - Order Shipment Exceptions (Table)

A row-level list of every shipment currently in an exception state, showing the specific exception reason for each individual order. This is the action list for operations teams, Each row represents a shipment that likely requires direct intervention, such as correcting an address, contacting the carrier, or reshipping the order.

Column

Description

Tracking Event Date

The date the exception event was recorded by the carrier.

Order Number

The ShipStation order number for the affected shipment.

Tracking Number

The carrier-assigned tracking number (truncated in the display).

Tracking Exception Description

The specific reason the carrier flagged this shipment as an exception.

Delivered Shipments

Review your completed delivery data using the following high-level summary and granular tracking tables. These components distinguish between standard and collection-point deliveries, providing an actionable audit trail of all successful shipments.

ANALYTICS_SHP-Tracking_Delivered-SHP_Dash.png
