Configure Pickable Inventory Locations

By default, all inventory locations are Pickable and can be included during order picking. Mark a location as Non-Pickable to exclude it from order picking while keeping inventory stored in the warehouse.

Configure Pickable locations in ShipStation individually or update multiple locations using a CSV import.

When to Mark a Location as Non-Pickable

Mark a location as Non-Pickable when inventory should remain stored in the location but should not be included during order picking.

Common examples include:

  • Damaged Goods:  Inventory that cannot be sold or fulfilled.

  • Quarantine or Inspection Areas: Returned inventory awaiting inspection or restocking.

  • Reserve or Overflow Storage:  Inventory stored separately from active picking locations.

  • Staging Areas: Inventory temporarily held before it is ready for picking.

  • Inaccessible Locations: Areas that are temporarily or permanently unavailable for picking.

Update Pickable Locations by CSV Import

Use a CSV import to update multiple locations at once.

You can use the InventoryImportSample.csv or export your existing locations. Exported files include the isPickable column populated with each location's current Pickable status.

Update the CSV File

Enter one of the following values in the isPickable column for each location.

Value

Description

true

The location is Pickable and can be included during order picking.

The location is Non-Pickable and is excluded from order picking.

To update the CSV:

You do not need to include every location in the CSV file. Include only the locations you want to update.

  1. Open the InventoryImportSample.csv or export your existing locations.

  2. Enter true or false in the isPickable column for each location you want to update.

Import the CSV File

Frequently Asked Questions

Will enabling this feature affect my existing picking operations?

No. All locations are Pickable by default and remain available for order picking unless you mark them as Non-Pickable.

Any picking operations already in progress continue normally.

Can I change a Non-Pickable location back to Pickable?

Yes. Edit the location and select Pickable, or update the location using a CSV import. Changes take effect immediately.

Can I manually move inventory into or out of a Non-Pickable location?

Yes. The Pickable setting only controls whether a location can be included during order picking. It does not prevent inventory from being manually moved into or out of the location.

Do Non-Pickable locations affect inventory quantities or inventory sync?

No. Inventory in a Non-Pickable location is still included in your on-hand inventory quantities and continues to sync to your selling channels.

To exclude inventory from inventory sync, configure your Sellable Locations settings.

Do I need to configure Pickable locations separately for each warehouse?

Yes. Pickable settings are configured at the location level. Update the applicable locations in each warehouse.
