Book LTL Freight Shipments

ShipStation lets you book LTL freight shipments, compare available freight rates, and select the service that best meets your shipping needs. You can book an LTL shipment from the Freight Grid, from an existing order, or by browsing rates.

Requirements

Before booking an LTL shipment, you must connect a supported freight provider account to ShipStation. You can:

Book a Shipment

You can book an LTL freight shipment from the Freight Grid, from an existing order, or by browsing available freight rates.

Freight Grid

To book a shipment from  the Freight Grid:

  1. Go to Freight.

  2. Click Create Freight Shipment.

  3. Add the Ship From details, including the Ship Date, Ship From Location, Pickup Ready Time, and Pickup Close Time.

    • If you will arrange a pickup directly with the carrier, select I will arrange a pickup with a carrier separately.

    • Select any Pickup Services required for the shipment.

  4. Add the Ship To details, including the recipient’s Name, Address, Phone number, and email address.

    • Select any Delivery Services required for the shipment.

  5. Add the handling unit details, including the Quantity, Unit Type , and Dimensions.

    • Select Stackable if other freight can be safely placed on top of the handling unit.

    • To add another handling unit, select +Add Handling Unit.

  6. Add the commodity details, including the Weight and Freight Class.

    • To add additional commodity information, select Show commodity details and enter any applicable details.

    • Select Contains hazardous material if the commodity contains hazardous materials.

    • To add another commodity, click +Add Commodity.

  7. To estimate the shipment density and freight class based on the dimensions and weight you entered, click Calculate Density. Review the recommended freight class, then click Apply Selection or Apply All to apply the recommendation.

    Note: The calculated density and recommended freight class are estimates based on the dimensions and weight you provide. Your carrier may determine a different density or freight class, which may result in additional charges

  8. Add any additional shipment details, including applicable Shipment Services, handling charges, References, or Pickup, Delivery, and Handling instructions.

  9. Select a rate, then review the shipment details and make any necessary updates. If needed, select Insure this shipment, then click Book Shipment.

Pickup Services

Indicates that other freight can be safely placed on top of the handling unit.

From an Order

To book a shipment in the Orders tab:

  1. Select the order.

  2. Click the Other Actions menu, then click Set Shipping Mode and select your LTL or Parcel.

  3. Once the mode is set to Freight, open the Order and click Edit Booking.

Browse Rates

To book a shipment via Browse Rates:

  1. Go to Freight.

  2. Click Browse Rates.

  3. Add the shipment details, including the Ship From Location, Ship To Zip, handling unit details, and commodity details.

    • Select a rate, then click Configure Shipment.

  4. Add the Ship To details, including the recipient’s Name, Address, Phone number, and email address.

    • Select any Delivery Services required for the shipment.
